Volunteer Roles for Tortoise Conservation

Volunteer opportunities change based on the needs of the organization. View some of our consistent volunteer roles below!

Emergency Habitat & Temporary Care

Volunteer to assist at our emergency tortoise habitat. Volunteers will assist with weekly feeding, cleaning, washing bowls and observing the tortoises’ behavior. This is a great way to get to know the tortoises and learn more about their routine care.

Administrative Function

Volunteer to assist with the administrative side of Tortoise Group. If you enjoy talking with other tortoise enthusiasts and prefer to volunteer from the comfort of your home, then this position may be for you! You can choose from answering Hotline calls, responding to information inquiries or assisting with Data Entry after clinics and special events.

Yard Consultation & Adoptions

Yard consultations and adoptions are a great opportunity to provide information and knowledge to future desert tortoise custodians. A volunteer position in yard consultations/adoptions is very rewarding and would ideally suit someone who is willing to work with people on their desert tortoise habitat and go to people’s homes.

Outreach & Education

Outreach and education is a great opportunity to provide information and knowledge to the general public about the desert tortoise. A volunteer position in outreach and education is very rewarding and would ideally suit someone who is outgoing and willing to speak to a variety of people and enjoys attending community events.

Wild Conversation

Wild conservation is a great way to get involved with projects relating to helping the wild desert tortoise population. These projects are hands-on and often can involve physical labor. This volunteer position would ideally suit someone that likes hands-on projects and has a passion for the desert.

ROaDS Citizen Science Project

The ROaDs Citizen Science Project engaged volunteers to monitor desert tortoise road mortality, collect data via a smartphone app, and support conservation through fencing maintenance and public education.
