How it Works

Fill Out the Form

Complete the adoption application to get started. Our adoption coordinator will contact you to start the process. Share essential details to ensure responsible ownership, support conservation efforts, and promote the tortoise’s long-term well-being.

Build Habitat

Share the flyer with neighbors, local groups, and online platforms to maximize visibility. Spreading the word increases the chances of quickly finding placement for your tortoise.

Submit Documents

Upload the necessary documents via email to finalize your adoption process. This step ensures proper habitat construction and helps safeguard your desert tortoise’s health through proper care & compliance

Receive Confirmation

Receive the confirmation that your adoption is approved. Your tortoise is ready to go to their new home!

Register Tortoise

Complete the RLAP form. This validates your legal ownership, ensures compliance with guidelines, and strengthens efforts to conserve and protect the desert tortoises with passion.

Before you adopt make sure you meet the basic requirements.

You cannot adopt a Majave tortoise from the Tortoise Group if you reside in Arizona, California, or Utah.  Please visit your state’s agency for adoption information.

Can desert tortoises live inside?

No, desert tortoises cannot live inside or in a terrarium. Desert tortoises must have access to direct sunlight in order to maintain their health and shell integrity.

Adoptions occur between March and September. During October through February, the tortoises are brumating, so we do not want to disturb them during this period.

Yes, desert tortoises must have a burrow within their habitat. The burrow provides them a safe place to escape the heat and rest overnight. Tortoises must also have access to a burrow in order to brumate during the colder months. In the wild, desert tortoises dig their own burrows, but in captivity, it is safer for them to access a man-made burrow.

Yes, there is a $75 dollar fee that covers the cost of caring for the tortoise while in Tortoise Group’s custody.

No. The tortoise must remain in Nevada.

Yes. Please look at our website at the care section titled “cold weather” or contact us. Special care is needed for tortoises kept in northern Nevada, outside their natural range.
